Incense Burner

During a recent extended stay in Japan, I came into contact with antique incense bowls and containers made of wood, stone, and clay. The fumes of incense have been used in ancient times not only for ritual purposes but also for healing. From its significance in liturgical practices to its association with the “art de vivre” of intellectual circles, incense has given rise to a great variety of artistic productions. Incense burners are used to burn fragrant substances such as special resins, roots, wood and herbs to support contemplation.

Under “images” you will find a selection of my latest series of ritual vessels.
